From September 15 to 18, the city of Naples hosted the IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSC) 2026, the flagship annual conference of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society. The event brought together researchers, engineers, and practitioners from academia, industry, and government agencies to share the latest advances in intelligent vehicles, vehicle-infrastructure cooperation, and the broader field of intelligent transportation systems.
QuantumNet was proud to take part in this international gathering, contributing to the conversation at the intersection of two rapidly evolving fields: quantum computing and smart mobility.
Our Contribution
On September 17, our team presented the paper “Quantum Convolutional Neural Networks for Road Surface Anomaly Mask Classification.”
The work investigates how Quantum Convolutional Neural Networks (QCNNs) can be applied to automatically distinguish between different types of road surface anomalies — such as cracks and potholes — starting from segmentation masks. By leveraging quantum-enhanced architectures for image classification tasks, the research explores a novel direction in applying quantum machine learning to computer vision problems relevant to road infrastructure monitoring and maintenance.
This line of research reflects QuantumNet’s broader mission: exploring how quantum computing techniques can offer new tools and perspectives for real-world challenges in transportation and infrastructure management, an area where accurate, scalable, and efficient anomaly detection is critical for public safety and maintenance planning.
A Valuable Exchange
Presenting at ITSC 2026 gave our team the opportunity to engage directly with the international research community working on intelligent transportation systems. The discussions and feedback gathered during the conference offered valuable perspectives that will help shape the next steps of this research, from refining the QCNN architecture to exploring further applications of quantum-enhanced models in the transportation domain.
We are grateful to the IEEE ITSC 2026 organizing committee and to all the researchers and professionals we had the chance to meet in Naples for such a stimulating exchange of ideas.
